The Truth About Baby Gear
The baby industry wants you to believe you need thousands of dollars in gear. You do not. Here is a practical breakdown of what is essential, what is nice to have, and what is a waste of money.
Absolute Essentials
- Car seat - Required by law. Get an infant seat or convertible seat. Do not buy used (you do not know its history).
- Safe sleep space - Crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play with a firm, flat mattress.
- Diapers and wipes - Start with newborn and size 1. Babies go through 10-12 diapers daily.
- Onesies and sleepers - Get 7-10 in newborn and 0-3 month sizes.
- Feeding supplies - Bottles if not exclusively breastfeeding, burp cloths regardless.
Worth the Investment
- Quality stroller - You will use it for years. Test drive before buying.
- Baby carrier - Hands-free holding is a game changer.
- White noise machine - Helps baby sleep and masks household noise.
- Diaper bag - Get one you will actually carry. Backpack style is practical.
Nice to Have
- Baby swing or bouncer
- Play mat
- Baby monitor (video is nice but not essential)
- Diaper pail
Skip These
- Wipe warmer (they survive cold wipes)
- Bottle sterilizer (dishwasher works fine)
- Baby shoes (they cannot walk)
- Expensive newborn outfits (they grow out in weeks)
Pro Tips
Buy used when safe (clothes, toys, strollers). Accept hand-me-downs. Wait to see what you actually need before buying everything.
