Week 12 is a big milestone. The first trimester is almost done, and the risk of miscarriage drops significantly. Here is what is going on.
What's Happening With Baby
At 12 weeks, your baby is about the size of a lime—roughly 2 inches long. Major developments:
- All major organs are formed and starting to function
- Fingers and toes are no longer webbed
- The baby can open and close their fists
- Reflexes are developing—baby might even be hiccupping
How Mom Might Be Feeling
Good news: many first trimester symptoms start easing up around now.
- Nausea often (but not always) improves
- Energy may start returning
- The uterus is moving up out of the pelvis—she might start showing soon
- Emotions are still all over the place—hormones are powerful
What You Can Do This Week
Go to the NT scan: The nuchal translucency ultrasound usually happens between weeks 11-14. This is often when you see the baby looking like an actual baby for the first time.
Start telling people: If you have been keeping the secret, week 12 is traditionally when couples start sharing the news. Discuss together who to tell and how.
Have the money talk: Start thinking about budget changes—parental leave, childcare costs, insurance updates. Not fun, but necessary.
Plan something nice: Your partner has powered through a tough trimester. Celebrate making it to this milestone.
