Twenty weeks. Halfway through pregnancy. This is a big moment—here is what you need to know.
What is Happening With Baby
Your baby is about the size of a banana now—roughly 10 inches long and weighing around 10 ounces.
- Baby can hear sounds now, including your voice
- They are developing sleep/wake cycles
- Vernix (a protective coating) is forming on the skin
- If you are having a girl, her uterus is fully formed
The Anatomy Scan
The 20-week ultrasound (anatomy scan) is the most detailed one you will get. The technician checks:
- Brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs
- Spine and limb development
- Placenta position
- Amniotic fluid levels
- And yes—you can usually find out the sex if you want to know
Tip: This appointment can take 45-60 minutes. Go with her. See your baby in detail. Ask questions.
How Mom Is Feeling
The second trimester is often called the "honeymoon phase" of pregnancy:
- Energy is usually better than the first trimester
- The bump is visible but not yet uncomfortable
- She might be feeling baby kicks regularly now
- Round ligament pain (sharp side pains) can happen as the uterus grows
What You Can Do
- Talk to the bump: Baby can hear you now. Read a book, sing badly, tell them about your day
- Start on the nursery: Good time to paint, build furniture, and set things up
- Plan a babymoon: Travel gets harder in the third trimester
- Celebrate: You made it to the halfway point. That is worth acknowledging
