Week 8 is when it starts to feel real. This is often when you will hear the heartbeat for the first time.
What is Happening With Baby
Your baby is about the size of a raspberry—half an inch long. Despite being tiny:
- The heart is beating at 150-170 beats per minute (twice as fast as yours)
- Fingers and toes are forming (still webbed)
- Facial features are developing
- The neural tube is closing, becoming the brain and spinal cord
- Baby is starting to move, though you will not feel it for months
The First Ultrasound
Many practices schedule the first ultrasound around week 8. This appointment:
- Confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus (not ectopic)
- Checks for a heartbeat
- Measures the baby to confirm due date
- Determines if there is more than one baby
What to expect: It will likely be a transvaginal ultrasound (internal) rather than on the belly—baby is too small to see well otherwise. The image will look like a blob with a flickering heartbeat.
That flicker is everything. Hearing or seeing that heartbeat is often when it hits: this is really happening.
How Mom Is Feeling
Peak nausea time for many women:
- Symptoms are often at their worst weeks 8-10
- Exhaustion is heavy
- Breasts are sore and growing
- Frequent urination is kicking in
- Emotions are all over the place
What You Can Do
- Be at the ultrasound: This is a moment you want to share
- Keep up support: She needs you most when symptoms are worst
- Start a journal: Write down your thoughts and feelings to look back on
- Take photos: Even of the blob ultrasound—you will treasure it later
The Anxiety
It is normal to be nervous before the first ultrasound. What if something is wrong? What if there is no heartbeat?
Most of the time, everything is fine. But until you see that flicker, the worry is real. Be there for each other during the wait.
